I’m back with another wine review, this is the second Wine I am trying from Independent Wine and this time it’s the Montecillo Verdejo 2017 | White wine | Rueda DO. A Spanish wine, which is great for me as I love all things Spanish. On holiday for the past few years, I have fallen in love with sparkling wine and I drink the bars dry of it! It’s very hard to get hold of in the UK but I managed to track down the last box last year. There is something about a very cold vino Blanco that just makes me happy.

The Montecillo Verdejo 2017 isn’t a sparkling wine, instead, it has aromas of grapefruit, lime, it has quite a sour taste. I tend to find it very acidic. I’m not usually a sour or lime fan and therefore I find it quite a heavy wine and very strong, with an ABV of 13%. It’s a great price and usually, it’s just under £14 a bottle just right now it’s on offer for £9.65.

It’s made from Verdejo grapes from sustainable vineyards in Montecillo and they ferment it in stainless steel vats to make the flavour more complex. I could definitely get the sour notes but this also has flavours of ‘citrus (grapefruit, lime), lavender, aromatic herbs and pastry.’ I’ve never tried a herby wine before so this was really interesting for me. It’s a pleasant-looking bottle but it’s not something I would have again.

I love that on the Independent Wine website they have a knowledge base that helps you to know what kinds of food to pair the wines with. I also find this really helpful. For example with this being (in my opinion) a heavier wine, it’s recommended to eat with all kinds of fish and pasta dishes. I can definitely see this going well together!

Have you tried any Spanish wines before?
