Hello and a very happy International No Diet Day to you all! You will almost NEVER see us talking about diets here at She Might Be, but on this one day, we will make an exception.

This celebration doesn’t really get much attention on social media. I don’t really understand why, because it’s really important.

I  just tweeted about it (please go ahead and follow me) using the hashtag #InternationalNoDietDay2019 and was surprised to find that I was the first person to use it. Okay, it’s early here in the UK, and it’s a Bank Holiday, while Stateside I know you are all still reeling from the shock of the latest Game of Thrones episode. (No spoilers, please!) But still, literally, no one tweeted about this today before I did?!

Let’s find out the details and how we can do more.

International No Diet Day 2019

What’s it all about?

International No Diet Day (INDD) was launched in 1992, by Mary Evans Young, who is a British feminist. She is the director of the group “Diet Breakers” which pretty much does what it says on the tin.

In the beginning, INDD was created to expose the futility of dieting and as time has gone on, now encompasses fat acceptance and highlighting body shape diversity. One of the main questions posed by INDD is the idea of one “right” body shape.

International No Diet Day promotes Health At Any Size (HAES) and raises awareness of weight discrimination and fatphobia.

How can I get involved?

Be vocal! Tell people about the day, in your everyday life and on social media. Spread the word – send them the link to this post! Wear a blue ribbon.

Declare yourself free from diets and obsessing about weight loss, even if it’s for one day only – give yourself a break.

Present the facts about the multi-million-pound diet industry, especially the inefficacy of commercial diets – you know, the ones where you will lose monetary pounds rather than physical ones.

Actually, that is salutary advice for every day, not just today. When a brand or company is making you feel bad about your body or pointing out supposed flaws, ask yourself what they stand to gain from it. Almost certainly they will be trying to sell you something and it’s usually something unattainable.

In summary, International No Diet Day is about freedom, choice, and being kind to our bodies. For me, every day is no diet day and I’m happier for it, I wish that same happiness for you.

XOXO, SMB
