Key Takeaways: Diverse Representation in Film
-
Breaking Stereotypes: Modern plus size actresses are moving beyond the funny best friend trope to play complex, three-dimensional leads.
-
Body Positive Activism: Many stars, particularly from shows like OITNB, use their platform to challenge outdated beauty standards.
-
Diversity Matters: Representation is growing across different ethnicities, including Black British, Latina, and Asian communities.
-
Career Consistency: Icons like Octavia Spencer prove that staying true to yourself leads to long term success and critical acclaim.
There has never been a more exciting time to celebrate the plus size actresses changing the face of film and television. From Oscar winners to Netflix favourites, these women are no longer relegated to the role of the funny best friend. They are leading blockbusters, winning major awards and telling stories that genuinely reflect the world we live in.
As an actress myself, I find huge joy in seeing other women in this industry succeed. Part of my own journey to learning to love myself has been celebrating the women who go before me, the ones who refuse to disappear, and the ones who are paving the way for the rest of us. So in no particular order, because how could you possibly rank women this talented against each other, here are seven plus size actresses I genuinely admire.
1. Danielle Brooks
Well known for portraying the role of Taystee on OITNB, Danielle is not only an incredible young actress but she is now an important voice in the body positive movement and in the community of plus size actresses. It is her journey to become more visible from the acclaimed Netflix show that pushed Danielle to start exploring her own body positive journey and speaking out about her struggles and her triumphs.

2. Jolene Purdy
Another OITNB cast member (can you tell I am a fan of the show), but Jolene has been around for a long time. You will definitely remember her from some of your favourite tv shows and movies. For example, Jolene’s breakthrough came in the indie film Donnie Darko as character Cherita Chen. Yes that is her! Since the beginning of her career Jolene has gone on to be in some other really fantastic shows. Unapologetic, hilarious and with a wicked sense of style, she is also representing the under-represented Asian community.
3. Adrienne C. Moore
Okay so you can tell I am mildly obsessed with the cast from OITNB, but to be fair can you blame me? I am in a candy store with the amount of fierce, plus size actresses who are racially diverse and incredible. Adrienne makes the list because she is perfection. Known for her part of Black Cindy in the show, Adrienne is a force to be reckoned with. Her ability to guide us through such a colourful emotional journey shows that her ability to be versatile is untapped.
4. Octavia Spencer
Now Ms Spencer has been working for years. As a kid I grew up knowing her as one of the few black and plus size actresses that would appear in tv shows and films as a secondary character. Regardless she had been doing something that is tough for any actor and that is working consistently. It was not until the 2011 film adaption of the book The Help that Ms Spencer became a household name and Oscar winner.
Who can forget that stunning red leather trench coat she wore in the 2022 movie Spirited? It was a powerful and unforgettable look that showed how to confidently rock statement pieces like leather coats for plus size ladies. Octavia is a shining example of how fashion can be a tool for self-expression.
5. Sharon D Clarke
I would argue that Ms Clarke is most definitely a black British counterpart to Ms Spencer. Ms Clarke has been a role model of mine since I was a child. If it was hard to see a plus size African American body on the screen, it was even harder to see a black British one. Her career spans TV, film and theatre and she is undoubtedly someone that I look up to and admire. She is representing the hundreds of young black British and plus size actresses like myself.
6. Dascha Polanco
This is the last OITNB actress I will talk about, I swear, but believe me Dascha deserves a mention. Nurse turned actress and now body positive and Latina activist, she is not only an inspiration but an example of how it is never too late to achieve your dream. She represents the plus size actresses and Latina communities beautifully and I cannot think of a better and more talented ambassador.

7. Sharon Rooney
Glaswegian Goddess, Rooney is well known for her phenomenal portrayal of Rae in E4’s My Mad Fat Diary. A look into the world of a fat teen with mental health issues and a troubled home life. For the first time it was like a light was being shone on the issues that most of us have faced or are facing as young people in Britain. A body positive babe herself, as an actor what greater gift can you be given than to tell an important story and a story that could change and sometimes save someone’s life?
8. Chrissy Metz
If you watched This Is Us, you already know exactly why Chrissy Metz belongs on this list. Her portrayal of Kate Pearson across all six seasons of the NBC drama earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations, but more importantly, it gave us one of the most honest and emotionally complex plus size lead characters in mainstream American television.
Kate’s storyline tackled grief, motherhood, body image, mental health and ambition without ever feeling like a lesson or a stereotype. Chrissy played her with such depth and warmth that you could not help but feel like you knew her.
Since This Is Us wrapped, Chrissy has continued to take on substantial roles. She starred in The Hunting Wives on Starz alongside Malin Akerman and Brittany Snow, and in 2025 it was announced she had joined the cast of Apple TV+’s upcoming crime drama based on Lars Kepler’s Joona Linna books, alongside Liev Schreiber and Stephen Graham. She is also a singer with her band Chrissy and the Vapors, proving her talents extend well beyond the screen.
What I love most about Chrissy is her openness. She has consistently used her platform to talk about her own journey honestly, the bank account with 81 cents the day she landed This Is Us, the years of not feeling seen, and the importance of telling stories that reflect real bodies and real experiences.
2026 Industry Update: Plus Size Actresses Breaking Records
As we move through 2026, the landscape for plus size actresses has never been more vibrant. Danielle Brooks made headlines in January 2026 by co-hosting the 98th Oscar nominations announcement alongside Lewis Pullman, following her role as Dawn in 2025’s blockbuster A Minecraft Movie, which became one of the biggest films of the year.
Sharon D Clarke continues to dominate British stage and screen. Her starring role as Carmel in the BBC adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo’s Mr Loverman earned her a BAFTA nomination, and her turn as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest at the National Theatre, opposite Ncuti Gatwa, was met with critical acclaim and an Olivier nomination. She also became the first Black female lead detective in a British series with the title role in Channel 5’s Ellis.
These women are no longer just filling gaps in a cast. They are leading blockbusters, winning major awards, and proving that the demand for authentic representation of plus size actresses is at an all-time high.
