I love a personal challenge. Whenever I’m feeling like I’ve lost focus a little bit, I tend to set myself a small challenge for the weeks or months ahead, focussing on what areas I think are my weakest at that time and starting from there – and luckily, I hate Drinkmate to help me do this.
November Challenge
My objectives for November were to make myself generally feel better; I’ve been feeling run down in general, burned out from over-working and struggling to get out of ‘bare minimum’ mode. When I feel like this, it is time to really get back to basics, which means setting myself a strict teeth-and-face routine, making sure I am drinking enough water every day and taking my medication every morning and every night. Once I have those things in place as a solid foundation, I can build the rest from there.
Drinking water sounds like such a basic thing to make sure you are doing, but I’m sure many people with ADHD will agree with me that it is also one of the easiest things to forget. We are constantly being told that if we are feeling the thirst impulse then we’ve already left it too long and our hydration is slipping. So how do you remember to do something before you feel the impulse that tells you need to do it?
Make water fun!
For me, I like to make drinking water fun. I’ve built up a bit of a collection of fun cups, and I love finding cheap Stanley dupes that make me want to keep a bottle of water next to me all of the time. The only downside is that those cups take up space, and I can’t keep buying new cups forever! Instead, I work with what I’ve got, and my favourite hack for drinking water right now is to make it taste more exciting.
I’m lucky in that I stopped drinking Pepsi Max during lockdown (I was on about a 3L a day habit and now I can’t stomach it at all!) so I don’t crave any specific fizzy drinks, but sometimes the need for fizz is strong. I recently got a DrinkMate machine, which carbonates your drinks in just a couple of seconds, and it has made drinking water so much easier. I’m not usually a juice person but recently I’ve been on a total Cherries & Berries kick, and there’s nothing quite like a fizzy Cherries & Berries to finish your lunch.
For those who aren’t ready to give up your branded fizzy drinks, you can still buy branded syrups and save money on the overall cost of your fizz habit. My husband loves Pepsi Max still so I made sure to grab some syrup and he says its an amazing dupe. We’ve got enough in the house to make us over 100 litres of Pepsi Max now, so I know we’re going to end up having to form a queue to use the DrinkMate!
I decided to call my challenge for November ‘Finish Strong’, so that I can approach the end of the year with the best mindset that I can, and I already feel so much better now that I am properly hydrated. It’s amazing how much clearer your mind is when you remember to drink properly! My next challenge is to find a good Irn Bru syrup because we are a classic Scottish family and always have a bottle of Bru in the house! But, as ever, it is important to start small and focus one task at a time. So right now it is all about getting – and staying – hydrated so that I feel like I am at my best.
