When this week started, I hadn’t even heard of Lucy Regler – though I’ve since found out that a couple of my friends had. Lucy is a make-up artist who does live streams of some pretty impressive make-up looks on Facebook, while she learns and hones her craft. She also happens to be a plus size babe, a fellow ginger (represent!) and an absolute joy to watch. Unfortunately, I came to know about Lucy when one of her live streams was hijacked by trolls, and what followed was incredibly uncomfortable. Lucy was an inspiration – she ploughed onwards, carrying on with her adorable multicoloured cheetah look for as long as she possibly could. In the end, she cut the video short as the trolls became too upsetting. I wanted to catch up with Lucy after the dust had settled – and here’s what she had to say!

Hi Lucy, thanks so much for agreeing to speak with us! First of all, can you tell us a bit about who you are and what you do?

Lucy

Hi, so I’m Lucy Cathryn AKA Makeup by Lucy. I’m a 21 year old Welsh gal. I study hairdressing at college and work in McDonald’s but my passion happens in the heart of night from makeup. I do makeup tutorials and more! Mostly to entertain and do makeup.

Have you had much experience of trolling before?

Yes, all the time sadly.

What was going through your mind when the comments were coming in?

My thoughts were – why can’t I listen to my own advice and not listen to them?

Lucy

We know you love make up so let’s get on brand! What are your top three make up products?

Well we all know highlighter is my top one! So in order, 1. Highlighter 2. Eyebrows 3. Eyelashes

Who are your make up idols, and who do you love to see on social media? (Make up or otherwise!)

There are so many amazing artists that I don’t think it would be fair to names, as I would be here years! But I love people who are true and have a passion for makeup like me. I’m also very grateful that through these videos I’ve got to meet some of my makeup idols like Steph Sheff, Linsey Douglas, Carrine Shannon Ann lynn c-a Rachel Bobbie and hundreds more. And this year I get to meet new idols, and meet some of them again!

Who are your go-to plus size fashion brands?

I am a fan of fashion but I wish they would bring out better prices for plus sizes. My go to brands are are Yours Clothing and ASOS.

I loved seeing how people banded together to defend you. There seems to be a real sense of camaraderie against trolls recently. Do you sense that? What do you think has caused the change in tone?

There has been a massive change and I think this because there’s been so many deaths through this. There is so much awareness of how bullying affects mental health that people are finally opening their eyes and giving a damn.

What would you like to say to the trolls now?

Can I swear? [Of course!] Fuck you. You won’t bring me down.

Lucy

Lucy’s story is not one about trolls preying on an innocent young woman until they made her cry. If you look back at Lucy’s video now, you won’t see any negative comments – because they were reported and removed as quickly as they came in. What you see instead is that 17.5k people now support Lucy’s Facebook page. You see a flurry of messages telling Lucy “don’t listen to them – you are beautiful”. “You are amazing”. Lucy’s story is about resilience in the face of bullying, and her amazing strength and courage. And honestly, that is the story that matters.
