  • Our Favourite US Black Plus Size Bloggers Part 3 - February 27, 2019

In honour of Black History Month in the US, we’ve decided to compile a list of some of our favourite American-based black influencers, bloggers, activists, Instagrammers, writers, models and more. Some of those featured are hugely popular, and others are unappreciated diamonds who deserve more attention. This is Part 3 of this feature because when I started to compile the list there were just so many awesome babes to feature that I had to split up the post so it wasn’t ridiculously long. I implore you to check out their Instagrams and view more of their work, all of these folks are wonderful and you should be following them.

I recorded a set of IG stories on how to be a white and/or white passing ally to Black/Brown and marginalized bodies… I was in the back of an Uber coming home from a talk at a university. My driver happened to be a cisgendered white male. He asked me what I did. I told him the things I talked about including race and equality. He disregarded everything I said, continuously cut me off, and told me that from “his point of view” things were changing and it wasn’t the same as it was back then. Never again, I told myself. I wondered how it was to live in such a safe sheltered Caucasian bubble, to live not in fear of your life, afraid to call the cops that end in deaths of young men and women. I often wondered how it felt to not be judged based on your color, stereotyped and typecast as ghetto, loud, aggressive or uneducated. Lazy. Hyper sexual. A monkey. A slave. I try so hard not to be that angry Black Muslim lady but I am constantly reminded that I am not equal. But, when you disregard someone’s identity, someone’s struggle, you apart of the problem. Empathy. Stop feeling attacked when someone mentions race. Your fragility helps no one. Your quietness helps no one. Your “I didn’t own slaves” helps no one. It’s not my job to stop systemic racism. Black/Brown women have carried this nation on our backs already. My blackness isn’t a trend. Use Google. Educate yourself on these issues. They aren’t secret. When I educate you, it is a damn courtesy not a right! Today and every day, we fight for disabled folks, queer, refugees, fat people, mentally ill, poor, Muslims. Have you ever experienced racism/prejudice/phobias due to your intersections? And, for my allies what can you do to support POC? Let’s unpack.
