Whether you’re suffering during a poor mental health day or you’ve just got a case of the Mondays, it’s super important for all of us to practice self-love from time to time. In fact – it needs to be a daily priority, in my opinion. You have only got one ‘you’, and it is important that you are feeling your fiercest in order to be your best self on the daily, but sometimes putting yourself first can seem completely unrealistic – and almost like a chore. With that in mind, here are five completely simple ways to show yourself a bit of self-love and remind yourself that you are number one.
- Take time to be alone & do something that relaxes you
It’s so easy to get caught up and swept away by the day-to-day, that we forget to take a little time dedicate just to ourselves. Take an extra long bath, read a book, watch some trash TV or maybe some self-touchy-touchy – whatever you need!
- Say no to something you know you don’t have time for, or that will cause you unnecessary stress
Saying ‘no’ is an issue for a lot us, and most of the time we might not even realise the negative impact it has on our mental wellbeing. Say ‘no’ to that friend who always wants to call you talk about herself, say ‘no’ to that shift-swap if you know really wanted the weekend to yourself, or say no to that salesman on the high street, who always wants to ask you for £2 a month for some case or another. It’s okay to be a little selfish if it means you’re not overstretching yourself or causing yourself stress.
- Give your body something nutritious
It’s so important that we don’t get sucked into all the diet & weight loss BS that is all over TV and social media, but that doesn’t mean that fat people avoid vegetables at all costs! We all know that eating instinctively is the best way to eat, but making a point of choosing a few snacks that you know will make your body happier will do you and your mind the world of good.

- Reach out to someone you’ve not spoken to in a while
Getting stuck in a rut is an annoying inevitability of adult life – it’s hands down the worst part! It often means we don’t get to speak to friends and family anywhere near as much as we’d like to, and those things we hate doing often take priority over what we’d rather be spending our time on. Taking half an hour to call an old friend will definitely feed your soul a little bit of happiness. Catch up on life and enjoy each other’s conversation for a while & ignore the washing pile for one more day with no Fs given!
- Put down your phone and be in the moment
Social media, checking emails, browsing She Might Be – it’s all at our fingertips 24/7. Most of us are never without our smartphones, but it does come at a cost.
Perfectly staged Instagram pics and holiday statuses on Facebook are the quickest way to make yourself feel completely rubbish about your own life if you’re not in a healthy mental state. Sometimes it’s enough to check yourself from time to time, and remind yourself that the internet is often a shiny, plastic take on reality and not real life. But there are other times when you feel yourself getting sucked in further and further to jealousy and comparing yourself, you just need to put the phone down and walk away for a while. At times like this, a digital detox will bring it all into perspective very quickly!
One final quick note – when you don’t feel good, it is easy to want to do anything other than treat yourself well. There is a huge pressure to be a perpetuator of good vibes, and therefore self-love, at all times and it can be completely overwhelming when you are suffering mentally. If you feel like you just need to wallow for a while, please do – these tips are only for those who feel ready to pamper themselves a little bit, and are not intended to invoke guilt or ill-feeling. You do you, mama!
